Speaking Exam Training- Topic: CHRISTMAS

In Poland students of Secondary Schools take an English exam when they are on the last year.
The exam called MATURA consists of written form and speaking exam.
Speaking exam is based on conversation, describing pictures, negotiating and giving justification for students' choice. I've prepared task based on the visuals with additional questions. They are in 5 sets and they are connected with the topic of Christmas.

Perfect Christmas

Perfect Christmas  is a title of the song by S Club 7. It presents nice and easy material to work with teenagers about falling in love at Christmas.
Students listen to the song or watch the video. You can ask them few questions :
What's the most important present at Christmas in the song?
What do you dream of under your Christmas tree?

Speaking Jar

At the very beginning of every course students learn mostly new vocabulary and grammar structures. They do a lot of listening and reading. They start writing words and sentences. The ability of speaking in a foreign language is usually limited to repeating words or phrases after the teacher.
How to encourage your students to start thinking in a foreign language and express what they think?
I use a simple jar ( can be a box) with question cards. They are usually common, everyday life topic-based questions.

May Holiday in Poland

3rd May  is a Polish national and public holiday . The holiday celebrates the declaration of the Constitution of May 3, 1791.
The document is considered one of the most important achievements in the history of Poland, despite being in effect for only a year, until the Russo-Polish War of 1792. Historian Norman Davies calls it "the first constitution of its type in Europe"; other scholars also refer to it as the world's second oldest constitution. Read more...

A Day with Shakespeare

23rd April 2016 is a 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death.

It's a great ocassion to use Shakespeare's stories with our students.

Irregular Verbs Challenge

Irregular verbs, we need to learn them by heart. If we don't know them, it's impossible to learn more advanced grammar structures.
As students already learnt elementary tenses, they know about three forms:
1. basic form - present smple,
2. II form  - past simple,
3. III form - past participle ( used in Perfect Tenses or passive voice)

Here you can find the list of irregular verbs ---> CHECK  ( for students from Poland mainly)

April Fool's Day Fun

"…it is now clear to me that anticipation of pleasure is the key to all learning… Environments that include pleasure, movement and creativity are truly the most successful for learning" Candace Pert

I really believe in above words and we teachers should provide some pleasure connected with learning during our lessons.
On April Fool's Day ( in Poland it's 1st April) I prepared a lesson based on a short film which is typical hidden camera humour. The film is so funny because children play the main role.

Are you a SUPERGIRL?

In the prevoius post I  uploaded a comprehension reading task about Women's Day.
But today I thought about adding some music to my lesson to make it less formal and pleasant.
Most of my students enjoy doing songs.
I found a nice song to use with students on the occasion of International Women's Day for example.
I really recommend this song by Reamonn - German rock band.

International Women's Day

As the Women's Day in Poland is coming closer I have decided to write this post earlier.
I'm going to use my reading worksheet at the end of this week, because in Poland Women's Day is celebrated on 8th March.  ---> womensday.englishbyann.pdf
You should remember about the importance of the Women's Day all over the world.
Thanks to many "battles" women had throughout the history, now we are free, have the right to vote and are equal to men  (at least in Europe). But it was not always like that.
We should be proud we are women!

"You can do almost anything you put your mind to. You can swim the deepest ocean and climb the highest peak. Be a doctor or fly a plane. You can face adversity and still walk tall. You are strong, beautiful, compassionate and much more than words could ever say! "

Happy Women’s Day!

Directions on the Polish Map

I use the image of the "rose of winds" to introduce names of directions to my students.
Then we take the map, for instance the map of Poland (or any other country) and students ask and answer questions about the location of popular cities.
(Where is....?     It's in the ............ of Poland.)
At the end to remember things better, students do written tasks.
Try my worksheet about Poland with your students:  direction.poland.englishbyann.pdf
They can find out about Poland.

Wh - questions

Question words are used in interogative sentences when we want to ask about some specific information. We put them at the beginning of a sentence, usually before so called 'helping verbs' (----> do, does, did, am, is, are, have, has...etc.).
It's good to refresh our memory from time to time. Study the above 'cloud' and try to do the task.

In every language there are expressions called 'sayings'  (  old and well-known phrases that express an idea that most people believe is true)  .
The following task presents sayings with the word 'time'. Read them, think what can they mean? Match them to definitions, and finally try to use them in given sentences. Try to translate them to your language to find out if you have similar in your language.
